KAMA DC Accepts Capacity Building Grant from Humanities DC

WASHINGTON, DC - A major grant from Humanities DC will help local grassroots nonprofit KAMA DC expand its unique immigrant-led programming and classes that are open to all DMV area residents. The capacity building grant will maximize the potential of KAMA DC’s team of volunteers to pursue innovative ways to advance its mission.

“This grant truly will transform KAMA DC,” said President and Co-Founder Will Todman. “Financial restraints will no longer limit our ambitions as an organization.”

“With this grant, we can organize more ambitious types of events, develop recruitment strategies for immigrant event leads, forge new partnerships, upgrade our technology, improve our communications and develop new fundraising strategies. It has also been a long-term goal to compensate our teachers and storytellers for their time, and this grant allows us to give honoraria for the first time.”

Since 2016, KAMA DC, a volunteer-run grassroots organization in the District of Columbia, has provided a platform for immigrants in the DMV area to share their skills and stories. KAMA DC highlights the contributions that immigrants bring to the community by hosting skills-based workshops, classes, storytelling nights, film screenings and more.

Founded in 1980, Humanities DC provides grants, youth leadership and civic engagement programs to advance cultural, educational and community-based initiatives. It aims to enrich the quality of life, foster intellectual stimulation and promote cross-cultural understanding and appreciation of local history in all neighborhoods of the District through humanities programs and grants.​
